How Do I Escape the Rat Race? A Realistic Guide to Escaping the 9 to 5

Are you miserable at work? Do you ever sit there in the office and think that maybe, there's something better out there for you? Maybe, you had dreams for your life and now you're sat there wondering how things ended up this way? Spending the best half of your life locked in a dim cubicle.

Stressed, worker, tech, laptopIf you're like the majority of workers out there, then you are not alone. It turns out 70% of American employees alone, are disengaged and miserable with their work. These were the findings from a study by 'Gallup', an analytics organisation that reports statistics on global issues. They found that this depressingly high majority of the population, had a negative attitude towards their working lives.

This figure will probably not come as a shock to most, as many reading this will be in the exact same situation. Only those born into very, very privileged circumstances, have the luxury of not worrying about how they are going to pay their bills each month, early on in their life at least.

Everyone wants to be free. However, the real world implications of pursuing such a thing can often make this goal seem highly unrealistic. After all, how else are you to make money unless you're contributing to the machine in some way? This is the way the world has always been, right? And the only sure fire way to live in this society is to get a job that pays you enough to live...

I'm here to tell you today that notion is completely wrong. They are OTHER ways of getting by in this world, without having to sell your life to a soulless corporation. If you truly want to be free, then heed these words and put the ideas into practice. Don't just skim through, unless you want to be a corporate drone for the rest of your life. There's real value in what I'm about to talk about, so sit down take a deep breath and lets focus.

First Things First Though...

You Need to Believe You Are Free

freedom, spiritual, free, wings
Mindset accounts for SO much. What we believe dictates our reality and so many of these beliefs are ingrained into us from a young age through our culture and parents mindsets towards life. The vast majority of people believe that they have to work their shitty job. That they have to take home a paycheck and climb the career ladder.

These sort of beliefs are not your fault. Our entire society is geared towards turning as many people as possible into low-risk, highly profitable and obedient tax-payers, from the minute we are placed into the education system. However, if you truly want to be free. You need to eradicate the belief that you are stuck in your job immediately, as it is limiting you.

You are not being held against your own will in your job. You decided to take that job, you decide to continue going into the office every day, even though you hate it. Understand that having a job is nothing more than a method of making money. As with many methods, there is always alternate ways of doing things that don't seem apparent at first. However, unless you believe that you are free, you will never see the opportunities to escape, as you are not looking for them.

Because the Truth Is...

There is only two rules you need to abide by, in order to do what you want:

1. You have to find a way to make money

And

2. You have to pay your taxes on the money you make

Once you have these two parameters covered and remain within the laws of the land, your pretty much set. As long as your paying money back into the system through taxes, you gain a lot of leverage. As all the system wants is more cash-flow, so it ostracizes and imprisons those who aren't paying towards the mechanism.

Rule number 1 is the most important here however. The way that you make your money will dictate your level of freedom. As I said, most people believe that the only way they can make money is by having a career, this is not the case.

So Here is Your Solution...

You need to find a way of generating regular income without a job

Come on now, your living in an imaginary land arne't you? No sir, I am not. Here's the stuff they don't teach you about in school...

Non-jobs and passive income

Simply put, a non-job, is something you can do or create to earn you money, that dosen't require you to work at a convential job. This is easiest to convey through examples, such as:

1. Creating a Youtube Channel and earning money from Ad Revenue
2. Building an online educational course and selling it online
3. Using your knowledge to start a consulting service

Elliot Hulse, illustrates this concept brilliantly in his video here. A video, that may I add, is on Youtube and generating him income from google ads. Which bring me onto my next point...

Money, plant, passive income, growth, cashflow

Passive income is the key to ultimate freedom from the rat race. Once you build upon and master this art, there will be no bounds to your levels of freedom. Passive income, is money that is generated for you, without you have to do anything. Wow, wouldn't that be nice? Well it's possible. Lets go back to example number two above... Creating an online course.

Creating and online course takes an unhealthy amount of work upfront. That work is what makes up the 'non-job' part of this system. This is because, although yes it is not a conventional job, it does require work to create the product in the first place. However, once the product is out there and people are buying it, you now have an asset that will continuously make you money, without needing any extra work. You have now created an asset. This is something you own that pays you, it's like buying a property and letting it out to people. Anything can be turned into an asset and with the rise of the internet it's even easier. The average Joe could even create themselves many passive income streams.

Do note, passive income can never be well and truly passive. It will always require a little bit of maintenance and marketing from time to time. Even better though, you can automate the work needed to maintain the product by paying freelancers that you outsource online. The general gist is to create a money making system that requires as little long-term involvement from yourself as possible. For more on this check out 'The 4-hour work-week' by Tim Ferris, an absolute classic on the subject. I'll go more into the details of this process, in another article ,so keep your eyes peeled as it is a fascinating topic.

So, what can I do with all this knowledge...

Well, if you want to escape the rat race, then it is as simple as this. Work on creating some form of asset that can continually pay you money long-term. There are hundreds, up hundreds of methods to generate passive income, you just need to actually be looking for it. You can write a blog and use affiliate marketing to promote products, make an online course, a Youtube channel. Hell, these are just the ones you can do right now from the comfort of your own home.

The important part is maintaining your income streams and using the profit to invest in more and more assets, to grow your wealth and make sure you never run out of money. So, ideally you want to be working on a couple of passive income streams at a time. I for example sell photo's, through stock photography websites and t-shirt designs, as well as run blogs. The whole sales and business process of these endeavors is sorted by the company that hosts the product, so it requires little involvement from me, other than the upfront work.

Once you hit a point were you can live entirely of the passive income generated from your assets, you are free and can do what you want. However, remember to always re-invest in more assets to grow your income and diversify your revenue sources, you can never put 100% faith in just one source.

But I'm already in a job and need paycheck to pay for my responsibilities. I can't just quit.

Your right, you can't. However, if you've found your way to this article, then there's obviously some part of you that wants more out of life than the 9 to 5. What you need to do first and forth most is take responsibility of where you are in life. Realize that you have put yourself in this position through the choices you have made. Whether it was from following the poor advice of your parents and teachers or a lifetime of bad decisions, it doesn't matter. You are here now and it is completely your responsibility to dig a way out.

cat, cage, birds, trapped One of the biggest mistakes people make in their life and careers, is locking themselves into a life that they can only afford, with the paycheck that their job provides. This is because you become more and more stuck, with little room to move around, as you need to continue working your job so you can afford to live. The more and more responsibilities and liabilities you pile up such as debts, car payments, material items, gadgets etc... The deeper you'll dig yourself into this hole and the harder it becomes to escape the grind. So, if your in a position were your already in a job and can't leave due to the financial implications, you need to do three things

1. Lower your standard of living
2. Build/buy assets on the side with the income and resources you already have
3. Live below your means

This process will take longer with the more responsibilities you have such as  a wife, kids, mortgage etc. However, it is entirely possible. If you're getting a good paycheck already, then maybe it's time to lower your standard of living and use the excess cash to invest in cash generating assets. I mean what happens if you lose your job or the company shuts down? You'll have no cash flow to fallback on otherwise. Money can buy you more time if you use it to invest in assets. Like I said though, always keep that belief that you are free and the belief that it is possible to free yourself. Even, if you've dug yourself into a bit of a hole. Count yourself lucky, most people never realize it is a trap, they just think it's a good job.
Business, escape, run, suit, police

Hang on! You're going to need a road map first.

These methods, sound so simple intellectually, however in practice they can be horrendously painful and difficult to master. The truth is, it requires a huge amount of trial and error. If your young with few responsibilities and have the time for that then, great! However, do you really want to waste years of your life failing again and again? Would you not rather get there as quick as possible and be completely free from the drudgery of modern life? Maybe even get there in a matter of months!?

The honest and best way to get there is to follow the advice of someone else, who has done it and laid out a road map for you to follow. Imagine if you had all the steps to achieving complete freedom in your life, laid out right in front of you. It would be great, wouldn't it? Which is why I highly suggest you get involved with a tried and tested 'road map' to freedom, designed by someone who has been there and done it themselves. By now, with this information, you should be ready to delve deeper and start your journey.

Here are the links to some of the best resources you are going to need to get started on your journey to freedom:
